Elementary Facilitating Collaboration Numeracy Project
This year, through our school story scanning process, 66% of our staff self-identified a desire to deepen their understanding and improve their ability to teach to diversity in the math classroom. As a result, a group of DeBeck staff members successfully applied for an Elementary Facilitating Collaboration Project with a focus on Numeracy. Throughout the year, participating teachers will have dedicated TTOC release time and will be supported by district teacher consultant Janice Novakowski. Below are our focus question and action plan:
Focus Question:
How can the structure of Math Workshop support the learning of mathematics for all learners?
Action Plan:
- Build a repertoire of math games, instructional routines, and open-ended math tasks.
- By January, begin implementing the Math Workshop structure in our classrooms.
- DeBeck administration will purchase the Math Workshop book for working group members.
- Janice Novakowski will provide in-class support by demo-teaching routines, modeling Math Workshop practices, and assisting with content creation to support Math Workshop implementation.
- Use TTOC release days on November 23rd and January 23rd to:
- Build and create Math Workshop materials and tasks.
- Visit and observe other classrooms.
- Engage in collaborative planning and reflection.
So far, we’ve had two collaboration days where staff shared their experiences, observed Janice demo-teaching and facilitating Math Workshop in the classroom, and participated in debrief and planning sessions. To share the insights and progress with the broader staff, the teachers involved in this project will present updates and key learnings at our monthly staff meetings.
