Action 3: Access to Materials-Math Manipulative Inventory

When we surveyed staff in December using the Making Thinking Visible Strategy “What, So What, Now What?” an important share from staff was a need for manipulatives and resources in every classroom. Manipulatives are concrete objects that allow students to explore an idea through an active, hands-on approach. Some examples of common math manipulatives are Cuisenaire rods, pattern blocks, fraction tiles, base 10 blocks, and Unifix cubes.  If we want students to be able to feel connected to their learning, we want to invite opportunities for them to take ownership over their learning and this starts with ensuring there are different access points and materials for students to show their understanding.

We started by working with our district consultant to create a list of the essential math manipulatives that every classroom should have. Teachers then took inventory of what they had and what they needed. Our new math manipulatives have arrived and delivered to classrooms this week! To support our commitment to continued learning, at our December Pro-d, we dedicated time for admin and staff to highlight different math materials and how they could use them in the classroom. Staff had an opportunity to explore and think about how this learning will translate into their classrooms.

Through our early observations, we have noticed when students have access to materials, there is a deeper understanding of ideas and concepts and students are more engaged with their learning.
